Ian Torres, a Triton College transfer support specialist, is dedicated to helping students successfully transfer to four-year universities after Triton College. His work encompasses more than academic advising – he assists with transfer applications, scholarships and making connections with university representatives.

“My assistance to students goes beyond academic advising,” he said. “I consider my work to be holistic and helpful.”

Along with his role in the Transfer Center, Torres serves as an undocumented student liaison, ensuring that undocumented students feel safe and supported at Triton College. He encourages students to contact him with any questions and concerns.

“I like to tell undocumented students that Triton has several resources, including counseling,” he said, adding that, “Our goal for the future, is to expand these resources and increase scholarship opportunities beyond what is currently available through the RISE Act.”

In Illinois, undocumented students are eligible to apply for state grant funding through the Retention of Illinois Students and Equity (RISE) Act, which provides access to state aid via the Alternative Application, according to Torres. Credited students, including undocumented students, are welcome to these services.

Triton is also working on creating an anonymous submissions platform for undocumented students “We have to remember that undocumented students are not just Hispanic or Latino students,” he said. “I like to keep in mind that these students have a lot of responsibilities outside of school, such as work and helping to support their families. Sometimes school isn’t their only priority, but we’re here for them.

Torres’ passion for supporting undocumented students stems from his own experience as an immigrant. Upon arriving in the United States, he met many people who were undocumented and witnessed their struggles.

“Undocumented students come in all shapes, forms and colors,” he said. “We want them to know that we’re always here to assist them.”

The Transfer Center offers a range of services to support students throughout the transfer process. Its mission is to empower students with resources and guidance to ensure a seamless transition to four-year institutions.
